“You can create a business that provides a craftsmanship-like service.”
We follow our passions because we love it! We're not exactly in it for the money. But still at some point you might find yourself stressed about your work. Working harder and harder to get to some visualized career point, and sometimes we can feel misaligned. Here’s how to stay in alignment with our passion.
In short, the answer is intentionality.
I've been studying the philosophies behind Japanese Craftsmanship and there's something we can take away from the beautiful way they do things. These skilled artisans craft items that not only have aesthetic value but contain functionality as well.

They create items like pottery, woodwork and clothing with beauty and intentionality. From the designs they use to where they gather their materials. Mindfully they work with precision and care like the maestro of an opera. They provide such great focus that their work becomes art.

This is not someone who mass produces products in order to fill their pockets. They're doing it with their whole hearts, and pay a lot of attention to detail. However, here on the other side of the world, it ironically feels the opposite… But we too can run our businesses with a Japanese-inspired craftsmanship.

Consider that you're not just making a sale, it's much deeper than that. You're participating in people's lives. You're helping to shape the experiences of the people in your community. A car salesperson doesn't simply sell cars, they’re providing a mom and dad with a vehicle that they will have through their highs and lows. A car that will help them get groceries in -10° weather, rush to the emergency room during a pivotal moment, or teach their kid to drive in.
When you understand the depth of your work, you can run your business in a way that is meaningful. Meaningful not only to you but to those you're selling to. You will be able to work more wholeheartedly and with a focus that is undeterred. We want to deliver a service to our clients that is unmatchable by our competition.
Focus a little more on your current client relationships and less on gaining new ones. Now I’m not saying don’t try to get new ones, but don’t forget about the ones you do have. After all, they’ve bought from you before! Continue to serve them if you can.
Simplicity is also a concept that is deeply embedded within Japanese culture and their aesthetics. They value the beauty found in uncluttered spaces, objects, and experiences. Your website shouldn’t be overflowing with information. Create avenues for them to learn more. If they visit your Instagram, is it immediately clear what it is that you do? It should be easy for them to inquire or buy from you.

When deciding the characteristics of your personal brand, keep in mind the intention behind your work. Take careful consideration of the way you interact with your clients and the experience you deliver. Even the colors and symbols you use in your designs. Choose them for reasons that matter to you and not because you think, "that's what they want."

This is how your business can reflect a uniquely handcrafted work of art. With careful consideration of the way you work and your brand style you can create a business that provides a craftsmanship-like service. One of quality, as well as style, that will be enjoyed time and time again for many years to come.
