"We're on a sailboat in a storm."
Dear imposter syndrome,
Art is subjective. Talent is subjective. It is not a fixed location.
There's not some door you walk through to go from new to experienced. It’s only our minds that create these lines of distinction. These expectations of “good” vs “bad”, “right” vs “wrong”.
Isn’t “being like everyone else” just blending us in, in the most mundane way? Shouldn’t I go against the grain in order to be a flower on the sidewalk?
Who determines what’s accepted anyways? Didn’t Bob Ross teach us to view mistakes as creative opportunities?
Our own personal views, joys, and desires evolve as we each grow older.
Let me say that again. Our own personal views, joys, and desires evolve as we each grow older.
What was considered a correct way of advertising 30 years ago wouldn't be ideal in today's social media driven society.
On the other hand, a vintage item might be worth more money today than it was when it was originally released.
We're on a sailboat in a storm. Shifting every which way with no real control of our destination.
I mean, who is to govern the level of emotion that could be received from something? Why are we able to go from not liking a song to suddenly liking a song? Or vice versa? We all have different perspectives. Different experiences.
Let's not let the judgment from others dictate our thought process and creations.
Take Popeye for example…Olive Oyl loved him because of his strong moral compass, authenticity, and resilience. His famous catch phrase was, “I yam what I yam”.
Attempting to be like everyone else is what makes imposter syndrome set in.
So I’ll just be what I yam.
